Selected Consultancies and Research Projects

May 2000 : awarded £700,000 research grant by UK Department for International Development (jointly with R.O. Jenkins, K. Sen and C. Dolan  of UEA, and in association with Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex). Project to investigate effects of globalisation on poverty in selected sectors and countries, using case studies of garments, textiles and horticulture. John Thoburn’s part is to study the world textile industry, with Vietnam and South Africa as the countries for field work.

(1999-2000: visiting professorial research fellowship at University of Nagoya held on ODG terms)

1998: October, teaching economic and social cost-benefit analysis on DfID-sponsored ODG short course on monitoring and evaluation

1997-8: project on industrial cooperation between Taiwanese and British enterprises to trade with China. In collaboration with Chung-Hwa Institution for Economic Research, Taipei, with finance from Taiwanese Board of Foreign Trade.

1998: wrote a working paper on ‘Industrial development strategy for Africa’ for United Nations Industrial Development Organization

1997: Global Competitiveness Expert to UNIDO on Strategic Management of Industrial Development in Nigeria, Phase 2 (SMID 2). Involved field visit to Nigeria and subsequent preparation of report on the macro climate for enhancing competitiveness and on the international competitiveness of six agro-related industries in Nigeria (food processing, textiles and clothing, rubber products, leather products, fertilizer and agricultural machinery) [March-May 1997]

1995-6: Consultant Expert to ASEAN [Association of South East Asian Nations] on 'Comprehensive Analysis and Review of Selected Industries in ASEAN' project. This involved advisory work on project methodology and travel to ASEAN headquarters for workshop.

1996: Short site visit to Phnom Penh on behalf of Netherlands Economic Institute to collect material for  bid to Asian  Development Bank for a trade-and-industry project in Cambodia [August 1996]

1996: Preparation for UNIDO of chapter of branch profiles of Chinese industries for UNIDO Industrial Development Review of China (jointly with Jude Howell of University of East Anglia Overseas Development Group)

1994: Consultant with Harvard Institute for International Development: three months consultancy on HIID's Economic Analysis Project, financed by the World Bank and based in Ministry of Finance, Jakarta. Conducted studies of Indonesia's main export industries (textiles, garments, footwear and electronics) and of the automobile industry, all based on company interviews. Reports on prospects for those industries submitted to Minister Coordinating the Economy

1994: Teaching ten week MA course in Industrialization and Employment at Makerere University, Uganda, to train government economists. This is part of programme to develop Makerere's MA in Economic Policy and Planning, financed by United Nations Development Programme and World Bank

1991-2: One year research project "Industrial Subcontracting: A Comparative Study of the U.K.and Japan", financed by grant from Economic & Social Research Council, U.K.
